Improving the wellbeing of communities in Zanzibar starting at the beginning of life.
The Problem
More than 1,000,000 women and children in Zanzibar lack access to high quality health care resources that help promote their health and prevent disease.
The documented maternal mortality rate remains high at 287 per 100,000 births and the under-5 mortality rate is 73 per 1,000 live births
Hundreds of thousands who do survive childbirth spend the rest of their lives suffering from irreparable trauma and disempowerment as a result of lack of safe, dignified, and respectful care.

WAJAMAMA is a women-led NGO built on the belief that in order to see the greatest social change, we must prioritize the beginning of life.
We believe that the power to form healthy and beautiful beginnings is a right that should be accessible to all.
Grassroots Organization
We bring high-quality, evidence-based medical knowledge and skills and adapt this into locally tailored initiatives that meet the health needs of communities in Zanzibar.
Being on the ground allows us to fully understand the health care disparities that impact our community on a daily basis.
Solution
We are working to improve maternal and child health outcomes in Zanzibar by making integrated healthcare services accessible to women and children from economically-marginalised communities.
Our model aims to ensure that women are the healthiest versions of themselves: physically, mentally, and socially, and the beginning of each life is as healthy and beautiful as possible.
We are improving lives by addressing SDGs 3.1, 3.2, 3.4, 3.7, and 3.c through the following:
Group Care
Prenatal Care
Postpartum & Well-Child Care during the critical first 1000 days.
Capacity building & simulation-based trainings.
Menstrual, Reproductive, & Holistic Health Promotion.
Disease Prevention & Screenings.

Our Future
In the next 10 years
We plan to establish our life-saving Group Care model as the standard of practice throughout the archipelago.
How we will do it
Refine GC model, test hypothesized pathway to scale, & integrate digital tools to help with training, supervision, data collection, and maintaining quality at scale.
Build capacity through simulation-based trainings for health care students, nurses, & midwives to become GC Community Clinical Facilitators (CCFs)
Build a network of expert GC Clinical Master Trainers (CMTs) to train, supervise, and mentor CCFs to implement the model.
Use high-quality data & evidence to influence policy changes and convince government to adopt model using existing systems.
Together We Can
Create a network of 200 Community Clinical Facilitators & Master Trainers.
Make the life-saving Group Care Model accessible to 19,000 birthing people and their children.
Create a world where all people have an equal opportunity to thrive. pregnancy
Break the cycle of loss, trauma, and disempowerment that often plagues women, children, and their communities
Increase the number of passionate and skilled health workers and providers
Change the narratives of many more women like Zubeda and improve the wellbeing of communities in Zanzibar!
